The rapid spread of disinformation fomented an already volatile situation and days later authorities, faith groups and the bishop are still trying to calm community tension. But regulators are finding it much harder to act against social media platforms for the disinformation that spread online after the attacks – especially after the mass stabbing in the eastern suburb of Bondi. After the church attack, unconfirmed speculation also swirled about the faith of the alleged attacker and his motive. A 16-year-old boy has been charged with terrorism over the alleged stabbing of the bishop, police said Thursday. At the time, Australian police dismissed her concerns, insisting that her mother, Marion Barter, had disappeared by choice, and wanted nothing to do with her family. Ric Blum told the NSW Coroner's court that he last saw Barter in June 1997, just before she left Australia. Blum told the court Cornelius had lied about their relationship, which was platonic, he said. Several years later, Ghislaine Danlois-Dubois met Blum in 2006 through an advertisement she posted in a newspaper seeking companionship. O’Sullivan concluded by reading Leydon’s own words about her mother, Marion Barter, read from her submission.

Sydney, Australia CNN —The alleged murder of a young Sydney couple by a serving police officer has opened a tragic new chapter in the troubled history between the force and the city’s LGBT+ community and cast a shadow over Mardi Gras, a vibrant annual celebration of their culture. The bodies of Sydney couple Luke Davies and Jesse Baird were found a week after their alleged murder. Adding to that distress was a photo circulated widely of the alleged killer marching in police uniform at the 2020 Mardi Gras. The couple's alleged murder has cast a shadow over the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. Recommendations to police included reinvestigating some of the suspected hate crimes murders, but also for officers to take courses in LGBT+ bias and to improve relations with the LGBT+ community.

CNN —Australian police have found two bodies in the search for a missing couple allegedly killed by a police officer. New South Wales Senior Constable Beaumont Lamarre-Condon, 28, was charged last week with the murders of his former boyfriend Jesse Baird, 26, and Luke Davies, 29. “We’re very confident that we have located Luke and Jesse,” NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb told a news conference on Tuesday. Lamarre-Condon had provided information to help locate the bodies, Webb added. Police previously said that a search of Baird’s home found blood, a “projectile” and a fired cartridge case that was matched to Lamarre-Condon’s firearm.

Two days earlier, the body of 38-year-old Krystal Marshall was recovered from the charred remains of her home after a house fire in South Australia, according to SA Police. The number of women killed by violence in Australia has ranged between 43 and 84 each years since Counting Dead Women began tallying deaths in 2012. Since then, she said she’s noticed a change in the way people, including the police, respond to domestic violence. But until those lessons are learned, state authorities are strengthening their responses to domestic violence. Whitford says it takes the community to come together to prevent more women becoming victims of domestic violence.

Sydney CNN —A 47-year-old woman has died after being tasered by police in New South Wales in the second deadly incident so far this year involving the weapon in Australia. Speaking on Friday, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said tactical police units shot the woman with a bean-bag round, injuring her shoulder. The woman was then shot with a taser before being arrested and walked to an ambulance, McKenna said. She later died in hospital. When she refused to drop the knife, it’s alleged White deployed his taser, causing Nowland to fall to the ground and hit her head.

The 44-year-old man was surfing near Lighthouse Beach, Port Macquarie when a shark launched a “sustained and prolonged attack,” New South Wales (NSW) police said in a statement. Police said a bystander applied a tourniquet before paramedics transferred the surfer to Port Macquarie Hospital in critical condition. “[He is in] a serious condition with life threatening injuries, sustained from the lower leg injuries, and also significant blood loss,” NSW Police Chief Inspector Martin Burke said. Australia ranked behind only the United States in the number of unprovoked shark encounters with humans last year, according to the Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File. Australia mourns 10 wedding guests killed in bus accident
  + stars: | 2023-06-12 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
SYDNEY, June 13 (Reuters) - Australia on Tuesday mourned the 10 people who were killed when a chartered bus carrying wedding guests rolled over at a roundabout, the country's worst bus accident in three decades. The driver, a 58-year-old man, was charged with dangerous and negligent driving over the Sunday night accident. Police earlier in the day said it would allege in court that the man drove the bus "in a manner that was inconsistent with the conditions." There were 35 passengers on board the bus who were travelling back to their accommodation from a wedding near the town of Greta, about 180 km (110 miles) north of Sydney, known for its vineyards and wedding venues. Police will interview some of the injured passengers who have been released from hospital and will conduct an examination of the bus.

The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. (1330 GMT) on Sunday near the town of Greta, about 180 kilometres (112 miles) northwest of Sydney, in an area famous for its vineyards and wedding spots. At this stage it appeared to be a single vehicle collision, Chapman said, as police tried to identify all passengers. Police said some people could be trapped beneath the bus, which was lying on its side. The driver of the bus, a 58-year-old man, is under arrest and expected to be charged over the accident. Heavy fog was present in the area when the accident occurred but Chapman said the cause of the accident had not been determined.

Brisbane, Australia CNN —A 95-year-old woman who was tasered by police in her Australian nursing home last week has died, police in New South Wales said Wednesday. Clare Nowland, a great-grandmother, had been in critical condition in hospital with serious head injuries sustained when she fell to the floor after being tasered. New South Wales (NSW) Police Commissioner Karen Webb announced the charges against the unidentified 33-year-old senior constable Wednesday. Earlier this week, Nowland’s family released a statement asking for privacy, and thanking people for their support. “Clare is the loving and gentle natured matriarch of the Nowland family,” said the statement according to CNN affiliate 9 News.
Brisbane, Australia CNN —Homicide detectives in Australia are investigating why a police officer felt so threatened by a 95-year-old woman clutching a walking aid and steak knife that he needed to Taser her inside her nursing home. I can’t take it any further as to what was going through anyone’s mind when he used the Taser,” Cotter said. “This is an outrage.”How it unfoldedPolice say they were called to the address around 4:15 a.m. on Wednesday to reports of a resident with a knife. Two officers found Nowland in her room, with a knife in her hand, Cotter said during the briefing on Friday. “It is fair to say that she was armed with that knife.
We’ve exposed a way bigger fish than what I ever expected to find,” Leydon told CNN. He revealed that he’d had a four-month affair with the schoolteacher from February to June, 1997 – the same month she left Australia. Two years after Barter left Australia for Europe, Janet Oldenburg took a similar trip with Blum, who she knew as Ric West. She filed a police report and the inquest heard Blum told police he sent all the jewelry back. In court, Blum denied her claims and accused her of lying.
